Do YOU remember voting in a totalitarian dictator?

I don't really remember that myself... but then agian its important not to remember too much if you want to avoid thought crime.

But seriously the Bush Administration is certainly not the only (or necessarily the worst) administration to abuse their power for economic and political gain. Even the rampant favors for administration favorites in the oil industry is not novel. As any high school student familiar with the Tea Pot Dome Scandal (or even student elections) could tell you,...

the levers of power are worked from behind the scenes, and to keep them silent they stay WELL GREASED.

But what worries me more is the increasingly blazen totalitarian rhetoric from the Bush White House.

With examples such as:
1. NSA warrentless wiretaps, in blatant violation of the FISA law, and in spite of provisions that allow for taps to be performed with only the court as a follow-up to ensure propriety.

2. Guantanamo Bay: and the UN findings of torture, refusal to ban torture, indefinate incarceration without trial, trial without access to evidence or lawyers.

3. The general refusal to release information citing national security and executive privilage on everything possible.

4. Attempting to place a unqualified lawyer on the Supreme Court. ( I mean seriously who was he kidding trying to put his personal lawyer on the highest court, without releaseing any of her work.)

5. Using gerrymandered intelligence to push us into a war we were not prepared for, and rewriting the history on the reasons for war once we are so deeply mired in it as to prevent withdrawl.

6. Creating a culture of endless war. The "War on Terror" is unwinable, even the most opptomistic apologists claim it will take decades.

These all ammount to what some fellow republicans are calling a "coup de 'tat on constitutional liberties" (former Republican Congressman Bob Barr)

We are ripe for an Orwellian dystopia the scale of which dwarfs even George's fears.

The two minutes of hate seemlessly melded into the "news" fed to consumers via the corporate media.

We need not be at war with East Asia or Oceania when there are terrorists everywhere we need to send soldiers.

And our Big Brother at Eschelon only spies on the "Terrorists" because Bush wouldn't let it happen any other way.

And even if you don't believe Bush is doing anything wrong, (and if so can I get some of what you're smoking... ) what happens when a big bad tax-and-spend liberal gets ahold of all these powers bush is gathering to himself, ... let alone a socialist.

The founders had a profound fear of establishing a government without checks and balances, ...

The Bush administration claims that the "war on terror, with no discernable end,grants them extrordinary powers to act as they see fit, regardless of the law or constitutional limitations.

Is this not the very quintescence of the descent to tyranny?

I would like to welcome you to my little corner of the Internet.

Here at The Cosmopolite we have a few simple goals.

Besides that I will ramble about my day and complaints about world affairs, provide (sometimes) whitty commentary, and in general offer a glimpse at how I see the world.
